About Us
Who We Are
The Association was originally formed in the 1980s when groups of students arrived to study in the various universities and colleges in the Waterloo region. The increasing number of students and many other Ghanaians in the region necessitated the formation of the Association to help solve the many challenges associated with settling in a new environment as immigrants.
How can we help?

Networking
The association provides avenues for new community members to register with the group through the official Facebook page and the website (provide hyperlink). We also have a designated student representative (Hyperlink to Current REP (?) on executives’ page) liaising with students arriving at the 3 main post-secondary institutions in Waterloo Region: University of Waterloo, Wilfred Laurier University and Conestoga College. This was implemented since data confirmed our largest influx of newcomers to the Waterloo region are often affiliated with one of the institutions above.
The association strives to meet with its members through multiple social events organized around the year, including a general annual meeting to specifically update members on progress. General events for networking opportunities include:
- Newcomer orientation and community outreach
- Business Expo and Info Sessions
- Summer Barbecue
- Picnics
- Christmas Parties
Members are encouraged to always reach out to executives or other members for additional information or clarification. We are open to new ideas and suggestions for improvements through our email (info@gcawr.org).
We are currently hoping to revive our committees and subgroups with special focus on Mental Health, Youth empowerment and Mentoring, Sports and Fitness, Financial Literacy and Career development.
